Most Important Factors for a Successful Deck Install

• No end-to end butting of boards
• Do not butt boards together on the main area of your deck.
• If your deck length exceeds the length of a single board (typically 20’), use a feature strip divider instead.

Airflow and Under-Deck Clearance

• The amount of open air space (from the ground to the top of the joists) determines which boards to use:
  • 24" or more of open air space
    • Use either tongue and groove or traditional boards
  • Less than 24" of open air space
    • Do not use tongue and groove boards
    • Only use traditional boards with a 3/16″ spacing between boards

Cross Ventilation Requirements (for tongue and groove boards)

• To ensure proper airflow:
  • Leave at least two sides of the under-deck area open for cross ventilation
  • Provide a 1/32″ gap between the surface of the tongue and groove boards
  • You may not use solid skirting or cladding with tongue and groove boards
  • Solid cladding/skirting is allowed only when using traditional boards with 3/16″ spacing.

Fastener Placement

• All face fasteners must be installed at least 3/4″ from the ends of the boards.
